Sclerotherapy is a simple procedure to remove unwanted varicose and spider veins. A solution is injected directly into the problem veins, causing the vein walls to collapse and eventually be reabsorbed into your body’s tissue. Smaller veins are absorbed in 3-4 weeks, while larger ones take about 3-4 months. Sclerotherapy is sought by patients for cosmetic improvements. However, some may elect this procedure seeking relief from pain, swelling, cramping, and burning in the region of the varicose or spider veins.
The procedure is generally 45 to 90 minutes long. We will use vision, touch, and a special vein light to identify treatable veins and confirm adequate injection sites. The site will be bandaged, and compression garments will be applied to ensure the medication remains in the treatment area. Treatment plans may vary based on the size and complexity of the veins.
Compression garments should be worn for 3-7 days after the procedure depending on the size and amount of treatment required. After the postoperative recovery period it is recommended that the garments then be worn periodically to prevent the development of spider or varicose veins in the future.
You are encourage to walk immediately and can participate in light exercise within 24 hours. You should avoid heavy exercise, sunbathing, hot tubs, saunas, pools, baths, and lakes for 3 days after the procedure.
